Cartagena de Indias (UNESCO-World Heritage), with its unique atmosphere is one of the most beautiful cities of the Caribbean coast. The city is famous for its colonial houses and churches in the old part of the city, fortresses and narrow streets, evidence of the important historic legacy of the city.
During the colonial period Cartagena was the most important port on the Caribbean Sea. This was because it was the departing point of the gold, platinum and emeralds to Europe. It was a temptation for the pirates and it was many times surrounded by them. San Felipe fortress was constructed to protect the city, it was the greatest fortress built during the colonial time. Today Cartagena offers to the visitors beautiful beaches and a great variety of hotels and restaurants that ensure a pleasant stay. At a very short distance by boat, you can get to the colorful islands of Islas del Rosario, where you can stay for one day or a longer period in one of the inviting hotels.
